A Salt Lake City police officer who was out of his investigating a suspected DUI driver early Saturday, was injured when a second suspected DUI driver plowed into the scene.

He and another officer stopped a driver under suspicion of DUI near 800 South and 1300 East at about 2 a.m. During the stop, a second driver, also suspected of DUI, crashed into the sides of the two police vehicles, said Lt. Brian Purvis.

The crash knocked over one of the officers who was standing near his vehicle and he suffered minor leg injuries. The second driver also had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, Purvis said. The officer was treated on scene.

Police are waiting to file citations or charges until the second driver is released from the hospital. The driver was still there as of Saturday afternoon, Purvis said.

One of the police vehicles was totalled, and the other was damaged but not a complete loss.
