Max Muscle to

open in Draper

The first Max Muscle Sports Nutrition franchise in the Salt Lake Valley is expected to open in Draper in October. It will be located at 428 E. 12300 South in the Draper Town Square. The franchise is owned by Kyle Dudley. The store will offer products that include protein powders, energy and weight loss products, lean muscle gainers and athletic apparel.

Utah nonprofits

get AMEX grant

The Utah Nonprofits Association has received a $10,000 grant from American Express for Community Development. The grant will be used to provide training to the staffs of nonprofit organizations statewide on how to measure the success of their various programs and how the groups can connect with and use local resources.

Antitrust watchdog

South Korea's antitrust watchdog said Thursday it has launched an investigation into whether Samsung Electronics Co. is abusing its dominant position in the wireless market to disadvantage Apple. The investigation could add a headache for Samsung in its global legal battle with Apple.

Ford unveils 15

models for Europe

Ford Motor Co. unveiled 15 new or restyled vehicles for the European market that it will launch over five years to revive slumping sales. While other carmakers are holding back on new car launches due to tanking European demand, Ford announced it will accelerate new car launches, expanding its lineup of SUVs and restyling the hot-selling Fiesta for the market.

Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, and a private survey showed businesses stepped up hiring in August. The data sketched a brighter outlook for the job market one day before the government reports on August employment. Weekly applications fell by 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 365,000. The four-week average ticked up to 371,250.

Service sector

firms expanding

U.S. service companies expanded at a faster pace in August than July, helped by stronger hiring. The growth at firms that employ roughly 90 percent of the workforce suggests the economy is slowly improving. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of non-manufacturing activity increased in August to 53.7. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion. The sector has grown for 32 straight months.

Olive Garden

workers sue

Servers at Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and other eateries are suing the restaurants' parent company, claiming they were cheated out of overtime pay and not allowed to clock-in until customers arrived. The lawsuit filed in Miami against Darden Restaurants seeks back pay and other compensation, plus attorneys' fees. Company officials had no immediate comment.
