A motorcyclist riding his dirt bike without lights was struck from behind and killed by a Uinta, Wyo., School District bus Tuesday night.

Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesman John Townsend said the crash occurred on U.S. 89, about two miles south of Afton.

Killed was Troy L. Turner, 36, of Afton.

No one was injured on the bus, which besides its 51-year-old female driver was hauling 22 members of the Evanston High School freshman football team and three coaches.

Townsend said WHP had received a complaint about two dirt bike riders racing through downtown Afton without lights and had dispatched a trooper to investigate. However, WHP soon thereafter was notified of the crash.

The bus driver told WHP that she was driving southbound on U.S. 89 and did not seen one of the bikes until it was too late. The bus struck Turner from the rear. His bike became jammed under the front of the bus before the driver could stop and Turner was thrown from the bike by the collision.

He landed in the barrow pit on the right side of the roadway and died at the scene.

Townsend said troopers were investigating the possibility that in addition to riding without lights in the dark, Turner may have been drinking prior to the accident.

The students, meanwhile, were first transported to a local church and later returned home by another bus, WHP said.
