NBA • Veteran forward Trey Gilder is expected to compete for a roster spot during the Jazz's upcoming training camp, The Salt Lake Tribune learned on Wednesday.
Utah's regular-season roster is currently set at 15 players entering camp, which is the maximum allowed by the NBA once the regular season begins.
Veteran guard Raja Bell isn't expected to play for the team or participate in camp, though, and his long-delayed buyout with the Jazz has yet to be resolved.
The 6-foot-9, 185-pound Gilder averaged 19.2 points and 7.7 rebounds in 34 games (31 starts) last season for Sioux Falls, an NBA Development League team. Gilder, 27, was on the Jazz's 2011-12 training-camp roster. He was cut from the club before the regular season started.
Gilder began the 2009-10 NBA season with the Memphis Grizzlies, appearing in two games before being waived.
He spent portions of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons in the D-League with Colorado, Maine and Albuquerque, and was a 2010 D-League All-Star selection.
The Dallas native spent the 2010-11 season with the Sydney Kings in the Australian National Basketball League, averaging 13.2 points and 5.5 rebounds.
The Jazz are expected to hold their annual media day Oct. 1, with camp starting Oct. 2
Morgan leads U.S. to 6-2 win over Aussies
Women's soccer • Abby Wambach broke a tie early in the second half and Alex Morgan added two goals and two assists, helping the U.S. women's national soccer team beat Australia 6-2 Wednesday in a friendly in Commerce City, Colo., that was coach Pia Sundhage's farewell game.
Sundhage announced earlier this month she was stepping away after leading the squad to back-to-back Olympic gold medals.
Swimming coach banned for life
Swimming • USA Swimming banned coach Rick Curl for life for an improper relationship with a teenage swimmer in the 1980s.
Curl, who ran one of the nation's largest swim clubs near Washington, D.C., and coached 1996 and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan, was scheduled for a hearing Wednesday before the National Board of Review. But he informed the governing body he was waiving his right to challenge the case.
The coach was accused of starting a relationship with a 13-year-old female swimmer in the 1980s. Kelley Davis Currin said she received a $150,000 settlement from Curl not to go to law enforcement with details of the illicit four-year relationship, but decided to come forward after the sport was rocked by a sexual abuse scandal two years ago.
NHL reportedly will move to 4-day week
HOckey • NHL employees at the league offices will switch to a four-day work week Oct. 1 because of the lockout, according to a person familiar with the plan.
The cost-cutting move will effectively cut salaries by 20 percent. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the NHL had not made the plan public. • Alexander Ovechkin is returning to his former Russian team Dynamo Moscow during the NHL lockout.
The KHL team said in a statement Wednesday that it has signed the Washington Capitals star to a contract that lasts until the lockout ends.
Ovechkin joined the Capitals in 2005 and was the NHL's MVP in 2008 and 2009
