Logan • Utah State football is off to its best start in 15 years. Still, the Aggies are one hit away from being in a precarious position.

As first reported by The Salt Lake Tribune on Wednesday night, senior backup quarterback Adam Kennedy won't play on Saturday against Colorado State due to a shoulder injury suffered in the season opener against Southern Utah.

Kennedy is being evaluated weekly, but the possibility exists that he won't play again this season, which leaves USU thin at quarterback. He is eligible for a medical redshirt.

The dilemma? USU quarterback Jeff Manning also is being redshirted, and recruit D.J. Nelson, BYU quarterback Riley Nelson's brother, is on an LDS Church mission. That leaves converted safety Devonta Glover-Wright as Chuckie Keeton's primary backup. Glover-Wright is currently Utah State's kick returner and a backup safety. He has taken all of the backup reps in practice this week.

He played quarterback in junior college, but has yet to take a snap in Division I football.

"We think he'll be fine," senior wide receiver Matt Austin said. "He's a true athlete, and the game comes easy for him. The option stuff that we do is no problem for him. He just needs to get used to throwing the ball. He can do a lot of things. Once he gets his timing down, he will be fine."

Keeton has missed at least one play in two games this season because of hits that he's taken. That, combined with his style as a dual-threat quarterback, made Kennedy a valuable option. Kennedy came off the bench to lead the Aggies to five consecutive wins last season. Though beaten out for the starting job by Keeton during the preseason, he provided quality depth at quarterback.

Rams' injury report

Colorado State coach Jim McElwain said that running back Donnell Alexander won't play against Utah State on Saturday because of a sprained ankle. The freshman is the Rams' leading rusher through three games. Chris Nwoke, however, will be available to play.

He ran for 1,130 yards last season, but has missed time this year, also with a sprained ankle.

"We can't seem to get away from those injuries," McElwain said.

Good starts

Through three games, Utah State has outscored its opponents 41-0 in the first quarter. The Aggies have also yet to allow a first-half touchdown. … USU will be attempting to win its fourth road game in five tries against the Rams.
