Warhol meets Murakami
In a flat world, the high and the low are the same height.
That's the view of pop artists like Andy Warhol and his modern Japanese counterpart, Takashi Murakami, mixing low culture with the highbrow.
The two artists' works are on display now through Feb. 18 at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art in an exhibit called "Think Flat: The Art of Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami."
The exhibit features selections from the Freedman Family Collection and BYU Museum of Art.
Warhol famously mixed pop-culture icons — Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor — into his art, along with commercial logos (Campbell's Soup, Coca-Cola, Brillo pads and more).
Murakami, whose works feature American icons such as James Dean and the Apollo moon landings, follows Warhol's model. As Jeff Lambson, the museum's curator of contemporary art, wrote for the exhibit, Murakami's "works, whether exhibited in galleries or sold as merchandise in gift shops, disempower hierarchies by eliminating the distinction between high art and low art."

Before and after 'Sun Tunnels'
It's a long drive from Salt Lake City to the ghost town of Lucin, Utah — about 200 miles, either cutting around northeast Nevada or looping around the north end of the Great Salt Lake.
Once you get there, practically the only thing to see is artist Nancy Holt's "Sun Tunnels" (1973-76), the assemblage of four 18-foot-long, 9-foot-wide concrete tubes, aligned with the sun at the solstice.
How Holt developed her art leading up to "Sun Tunnels" is the topic of "Nancy Holt: Sightlines," a traveling exhibit that lands Oct. 19-Jan. 5 at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.
The exhibit — organized by the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University, and curated by Alena J. Williams — examines Holt's early projects that were a centerpiece of the "Land Art" movement. Holt worked in many mediums, including films, video, site-specific installations, books and sculpture, as her perception of landscape transformed over a 14-year period from 1966 to 1980.
