Ogden • It's a process, one that, bit by bit, should conclude with winning football.

Despite a negative start, Weber State coach Jody Sears believes that positive results will come once the base of his program is strengthened.

"Our whole mission is to make sure that we're taking care of our daily business," the first-year head coach said. "The process of each day is making sure our kids' focus is where it needs to be."

This week, that focus falls on another struggling program, one taking its first steps in the Big Sky Conference — UC Davis.

The Wildcats (0-4, 0-1 BSC) and Aggies (1-3, 0-1) kick off at 7 p.m. MDT Saturday in Aggie Stadium.

UC Davis has lost three straight, including its first Big Sky game last week, 28-20, at Cal Poly.

"What's been happening, we have jumped out to an early lead and we have stalled offensively," said Aggie coach Bob Biggs, set to retire after this season, his 20th at UC Davis.

Conversely, Weber State has been stuck at the gate. In eight quarters of first-half football, the Wildcats have kicked just two field goals.

WSU's 32-26 loss to No. 7 Eastern Washington in its BSC opener Saturday began much the same way, with the Eagles in front 20-3 at the half. The Wildcats rallied but failed to score the game-winner on their final possession.

After 31/2 games of struggles against two FBS teams (BYU and Fresno State) and two ranked FCS foes, Weber State's second half provided a glimpse of what quarterback Mike Hoke and company could do.

Despite a handful of drops, Hoke finished the day 17 of 34 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 50 yards for 299 yards of total offense.

"You have examples and tangible things you can see," Sears said. "We need to continue to do that so we can start throwing up some W's.

"We have to have a plan for UC Davis. At the end of the day, our focus remains on ourselves." —
