soccer • Jozy Altidore was dropped Monday from the U.S. roster for critical World Cup qualifiers, and Landon Donovan was among the 24 players selected despite injuring his left knee last weekend.

Altidore has nine goals in 10 games this season for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands and is tied for the Dutch league lead with eight goals, but had little impact during two qualifiers against Jamaica last month.

"I communicated with Jozy that I was not happy about his latest performances with us, maybe even over the last 14 months," Klinsmann said during a conference call. "I think Jozy can do much, much better and the reason why he's not coming in is mainly about the performances in Jamaica and at home, also in training"

Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman and goalkeeper Nick Rimando are on the roster.

The U.S. visits Antigua and Barbuda on Friday, and hosts Guatemala next Tuesday in Kansas City, Kan.

Ryder captaincy on Woods' bucket list

golf • Tiger Woods hopes to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team someday. He still plans to play in a few more before that happens. Woods is coming off a disappointing performance at Medinah. He secured only half a point in his seventh Ryder Cup appearance as Europe retained the title Sept. 30.

Woods says "when my golfing life is slowing down and when it's over, that would be a huge honor to be a part of a Ryder Cup from a captaincy side."

Woods arrived Monday in Belek, Turkey, for the $5.3 million Turkish Airways World Golf Finals, an eight-player event being promoted simply as "Tiger v Rory." McIlroy, who plays Woods on Wednesday, says he hasn't "touched a club since the Ryder Cup."

Eskimov to manage Russian bike team

CYCLING • Three-time Olympic champion Viatcheslav Ekimov, a longtime teammate of Lance Armstrong, is the new general manager of the Russian cycling team Katusha. The team says Ekimov will replace Hans-Michael Holzer of Germany. Ekimov rode with the U.S. Postal Service team in 1997-98, before Armstrong won his first Tour de France. He returned in 2000 and rode in some of Armstrong's subsequent Tour victories through 2005
