Firefighters worked on mopping up remaining hot spots Monday at a 40-acre blaze that burned in grasslands at the mouth of Ogden Canyon overnight.
Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Mathew Schwenk said the cause of the fire, which ignited about 4 p.m. Sunday on the north end of the canyon, appeared to be human-caused but remained under investigation.
"It looks like it pretty much put itself out overnight," Schwenk said Monday. "We're basically in mop-up mode today with about 14 personnel and a helicopter on standby."
Ogden, Weber County and U.S. Forest Service firefighters initially responded Sunday afternoon, finding the fire had started near a hiking trail. A witness told investigators that two juveniles were seen running away from the area shortly before the fire was spotted.
