Sandy • Waterford sophomore Madeline Morrill wasted little time showing Richfield that Saturday's 2A girls soccer state quarterfinal was going to be a battle.

The sophomore found the net off a cross from Caroline Coats less than a minute into the game, then she added a second-half goal to help Waterford advance to the state semifinals with a 4-0 victory.

"Getting that goal in the first bit means the other team has to score two to get past you, and I think that gave us a big lift," Morrill said.

Richfield's best look in the first half came in the 17th minute when the ball deflected several times in front of the Waterford box, but goalkeeper Lauren Groathouse came out to snuff the threat.

Waterford defender Grace Sponaugle scored in the 21st minute, and the Ravens closed the half with a goal in the final minute for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

"We talked about the opening minute specifically because I felt like it would be a little shock factor if we could get an early score," Waterford coach Tim Dolbin said.

Groathouse recorded her ninth shutout of the season and second consecutive in the 2A playoffs by stopping several well-struck balls in the second half.

"You have to stay mentally sharp at all times and just be ready when the shot comes," she said.

The second half featured the physical style of soccer Dolbin anticipated from Richfield, but the Ravens managed to pad their lead in the 55th minute. Morrill aggressively went after a long ball, quickly changed directions and deftly pushed in her second goal.

Waterford advances to Friday's state semifinals, where it will face Maeser Prep.

Maeser Prep 2, American Leadership 1 on PKs • Maeser Prep's Andi Decker scored a late goal to send the game to overtime. Decker, Dallyn Club and Lauren Dodge all scored in the shootout, and goalkeeper Ellie Resendiz made a huge stop to lift the Lions into the state semifinals.

St. Joseph 2, Millard 0 • Kate Weil and Kallie Kashiwaeda scored in the first half, and Ali Koehler recorded the shutout to lead St. Joseph to the road win.

Manti 1 Summit Academy 0 • Manti's victory prevented an all-2A North state semifinal. Bailee Golding scored the game's lone goal in the second half, and Heidi Richardson preserved the win with a shutout. —
