If Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is true to his word, expect running back John White to get more touches against Oregon State.
White, who had just 11 carries for 44 yards in Utah's loss at UCLA, should be getting more touches than the 17.8 carries per game he is averaging, Whittingham said.
"We've got to make more of a concerted effort to run," Whittingham said. "I don't think we ran enough."
Last year White was averaging 24 carries a game to finish with 1,519 total yards. He finished ranked 11th nationally, averaging 116.8 yards a game.
He is far below that mark this year, averaging only 69 yards. White, who had just one carry for no gain in the second half Saturday, was curt after the game, noting he runs the offense coordinator Brian Johnson tells him to run.
It sounds now like he might get a chance to get more carries.
"We need to accentuate the run game more," Whittingham said.
The Utes sacked UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley twice Saturday, a slight improvement after failing to sack USC's Matt Barkley two weeks ago.
However, Utah still has to get more pressure on quarterbacks, both Whittingham and defensive end Trevor Reilly said Monday.
Whittingham said the defensive breakdowns that let Hundley get out of the pocket were the biggest negative he saw.
"We were nowhere disciplined enough," said Whittingham, who noted many of Hundley's escapes came on third-down conversions.
UCLA was 10-for-17 on conversions.
"Anytime a team is over 50 percent, that is way too high," he said. "A lot were due to letting the quarterback escape. We have to be more disciplined and coach that better."
Reilly said the Utes didn't do a good job tackling Hundley when they did get their hands on him.
"It's frustrating to even talk about," he said. "We had a couple shots and he squirmed out of there like a rattlesnake."
