Fox, NASCAR extend contract
AUTO RACING • NASCAR and Fox announced an eight-year, $2.4 billion extension Monday that runs through 2022 and keeps the prestigious Daytona 500 and first third of the Sprint Cup Series on the network. The deal begins in 2015. The $300 million average annual fee is up from the $225 million Fox has been paying.
NHL, players setto resume talks
hockEy • The NHL and its locked-out players will resume negotiations Tuesday in Toronto after a four-day break following two days of meetings last week. The announcement Monday comes on the same day players missed their first scheduled paycheck of the regular season. The NHL has called off 82 games through Oct. 24 the first two weeks of the season. More cancellations likely will be made soon if a deal isn't reached.
Asian federation apologizes over slur
soccer • Asian soccer's governing body has apologized for referring to the United Arab Emirates national team as the "Sand Monkeys." The comment came in an article on the Asian Football Confederation website and set off a wave of criticism in the Gulf country.
The AFC called it a "genuine mistake" inserted by a new writer who saw "Sand Monkeys" wrongly listed as the team's nickname on its Wikipedia page.
