Provo • Coach Dave Rose will split his basketball squad as evenly as possible for Wednesday night's Cougar Tipoff — an intrasquad scrimmage at the Marriott Center — but a few players might not be able to participate.

The Cougars are a bit banged up after a few weeks of practice.

Forward Stephen Rogers (knee) and guard Anson Winder (ankle) missed Tuesday's practice entirely, while Brandon Davies played with a "really sore back," according to Rose. Forward Nate Austin missed a couple of practices last week with a quadriceps injury, but he has played this week — albeit with a shiner under his eye.

"We've had some incredibly intense practices," said guard Tyler Haws. "This team competes every single second."

Rogers practiced Friday and participated in a scrimmage Saturday, but he came back Monday and his knee, surgically repaired twice, was swollen again. So Rogers visited the doctor Tuesday.

Having players miss practice "gives you a little bit of anxiety, because you want more consistency," Rose said. "But for the most part, I think the guys are doing all right."

Haws is ready

Wednesday's scrimmage will mark the first time Haws, a returned missionary, has played basketball in front of a large crowd since the Cougars' NCAA Tournament loss to Kansas State in March 2010.

"I have been back six months, and my body feels as good as it did when I left," he said. "I feel like I have to do more stuff after practice to get my body recovered, but those are things we can do and manage, so everything is good."

Davies makes list

Davies checked in at No. 25 on CBSsports.com's Top 50 Big Men in college basketball list, published Tuesday.

Indiana's Cody Zeller topped the list. Gonzaga's Elias Harris, whom Davies and the Cougars will face twice this season, is No. 16.

Notre Dame's Jack Cooley is No. 24. BYU and Notre Dame could meet in the championship game or the consolation game at the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y., next month.

Exhibition opener

The Cougars open the exhibition season on Friday at the Marriott Center against Southeastern Oklahoma State, an NCAA Division II program located in Durant, Okla. The Savage Storm went 12-17 last year and qualified for the American Conference Tournament in its first year of competition.

On Nov. 3, the Cougars continue the exhibition schedule with a home game against the University of Findlay (Ohio). —
