Sporting KC wins Eastern Conference
Soccer • C.J. Sapong scored the go-ahead goal off an assist from Kei Kamara, and Sporting Kansas City beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Wednesday in Kansas City, Kan., to win its second straight Eastern Conference regular-season title.
Antoine Hoppenot scored an equalizer early in the second half for the Union (10-17-6), but Sapong answered when Kamara found him open on the wing in the 82nd minute.
Serena tops Li at WTA Championships
Tennis • Serena Williams overcame an erratic serve to beat Li Na 7-6 (1), 6-3 on Wednesday for her second win in round-robin matches at the WTA Championships in Istanbul.
Williams had six double-faults and won only 51 percent of points on her first serve. But Li also struggled on serve there were eight breaks in the first set and three more in the second.
Armstrong may lose marathon result
Running • Lance Armstrong's results erased from the record books will likely include his 868th-place finish at the 2006 New York City Marathon.
Marathon organizer New York Road Runners said in a statement Wednesday it expected to wipe out his times once any potential appeals play out.
