Arlington, Texas • Utah State began its win last week over New Mexico State by scoring on its first offensive play from scrimmage.

In Saturday's 48-17 conquest of Texas San-Antonio, the Aggies took a little longer — they scored on the second play from scrimmage.

Most importantly, USU has racked up at least 30 points in its last three matchups. It's safe to say Utah State's offensive woes are in the past.

"We've gotten into a pretty good rhythm on offense in the past few weeks," sophomore quarterback Chuckie Keeton said. "We knew that we were going to have to come out and play well against this team if we wanted to win. To get that win is huge for us. We still have a lot of things to work on, though."

Keeton, as usual, injected himself into the storyline, completing 27 of 36 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Twelve USU players caught at least one ball.

Leading 7-3 early, Utah State scored 20 consecutive points to conclude the first half. The Aggies then stretched their lead to 48-10. Playing against a Roadrunners team with a 5-2 record, Utah State put things away early and never let Texas San-Antonio back into it.

"This is a good win for us," USU coach Gary Andersen said. "To come into the Alamodome, play a good team like UTSA and to come out with a win is big. We knew we would have to play well and physical. I thought we were solid defensively. I thought Chuckie did a nice job of throwing the ball around the field. He was good for us today. I thought the play out of our second-team defense was disappointing. We have to be more well-rounded than that."

Utah State matched its win total from last season, a month earlier than the Aggies did last year. A win next week over Texas State will give USU eight victories for the first time since 1972.

Senior running back Kerwynn Williams had 13 carries for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Aggies' defense surrendered just 51 yards on the ground.

Most encouraging for USU was its dominance when expected. Just like with New Mexico State, the Aggies played loose and free, unlike a heavy favorite.

USU's short passing game found a bunch of targets. Senior wide receiver Cam Webb caught a career-high five passes and hauled in his first career touchdown catch. And as the game entered blowout territory, Andersen was able to secure rest for his first-team offense and defense.

"It was good to be able to get our younger guys some extensive time," Andersen said. "I thought we had some communication issues with our second group, but we're going to need everyone as the season goes on. We have a bunch of big games coming up, so we need everyone on the same page." —
