New emergency

facility for Roy

Davis Hospital and Medical Center, which is part of IASIS Healthcare, will break ground next week on a new freestanding emergency department in Roy. The $11.4 million, 14-bed project is expected to open its doors in the early summer of 2013. It will be located at 3451 W. 5600 South.

Workforce services

gets top awards

The U.S. Department of Labor presented Awards of Excellence to the Utah Department of Workforce Services for key areas of the state's unemployment insurance program — benefit payment functions, appeals decisions and tax operations. The awards typically are presented to several states, but Utah this year was the top performer among medium-sized states in all three areas.

Finicity adapts app

for Android devices

Finicity Corp., South Jordan, has adapted its home budgeting and bill paying system, Mvelopes, to run as an app on Android devices. Mvelopes, is billed by the company as the only household budgeting app that allows users to transfer money from one bank to another quickly and easily. The company previously had released an app for iPhones.

U.S. jobless

claims fall

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 363,000 last week, a level consistent with modest hiring. Applications have fluctuated between 360,000 and 390,000 since January. During that time, employers added about 150,000 jobs a month, which reduced the unemployment rate from 8.3 percent in January to 7.8 percent in September.

Small business

hiring still slow

Small businesses kept to their slow pace of hiring during October, according to a report by payroll service ADP. It said small businesses added 50,000 workers last month, and medium-sized businesses added 27,000. The report was another sign that owners are still cautious while they wait to see what happens to their companies' sales, the economy and next week's election.

Builders boost

Sept. spending

U.S. builders spent more on home construction in September — 0.6 percent compared to August — offsetting weakness in nonresidential building and government projects. Home building rose 2.8 percent. Spending on commercial projects such as office buildings and shopping centers fell 0.1 percent and spending on government projects fell 0.8 percent, the third monthly decline.

Driven by higher customer traffic, Starbucks Corp. said its global revenue at cafes open at least a year rose 6 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2013. For the July-September period, Starbucks earned $359 million, or 46 cents per share, from $358.5 million, or 47 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 11 percent to $3.36 billion.
