A California man died Thursday morning after he crashed his motorcycle in Uintah County.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said Stephen Trottier, 55, of La Miranda, Calif., was riding his motorcycle about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday north of Vernal when he left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The impact caused the motorcycle to overturn and Trottier was thrown 15 feet.

He was transported to a hospital by medical helicopter but died early Thursday morning, Johnson said.

He was wearing a helmet and protective gear. Johnson said troopers aren't sure why Trottier's motorcycle left the roadway.
