Provo • A couple of old foes from their days together in the Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences will meet in the 2012 college football postseason.
San Diego State on Monday accepted a bid to play BYU in the Poinsettia Bowl, which will be played Dec. 20 at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium (6 p.m. MST) and will be televised by ESPN.
The Cougars (7-5) have been contracted to play in the Poinsettia Bowl since last year as long as they were bowl eligible and not invited to play in a Bowl Championship Series game. They officially accepted the bid Nov. 10 after defeating Idaho.
San Diego State (9-3) has won seven straight games and tied Fresno State for the MWC title with a 7-1 record.
The Cougars and Aztecs played every year from 1998-2010 until BYU went independent. At the time, SDSU coach Rocky Long said he wasn't interested in playing the Cougars, but next month's bowl game will force the former New Mexico coach into matching up again with BYU.
Boise State is 6-1 in MWC play and can move into a three-way tie for the league crown with a win at Nevada on Saturday.
BYU has never played in the Poinsettia Bowl. The Cougars last played in a bowl game in San Diego in 1993, losing 28-21 to Ohio State in the Holiday Bowl.
