Although they are not conducting official practices (just workouts and conditioning sessions) for the next two weeks, BYU's football coaches are staying busy and working on some recruiting, it appears. Tuesday, the Cougars received a commitment from high schooler Jordan Preator, an athlete from Fremont High (Plain City) in Northern Utah. Preator, 6-foot, 183 pounds, says he played everything from quarterback to safety to punter and kicker for the Silverwolves, but will likely play safety or cornerback at BYU. Preator suffered a torn hamstring last summer, then re-tore it in Fremont's opener against Jordan. After sitting out a bunch of games, he hurt it again when Fremont played state 5A runner-up Syracuse. BYU coaches had seen enough of his exploits on film, and his play as a junior, to offer him a scholarship, however. He also had an offer from Hawaii. He had been talking to Utah and Utah State, but neither school had come through with an offer as of Tuesday. "I just decided that BYU was the place I needed to be," he said. Preator will greyshirt and pay his own way next fall semester, then receive a scholarship in January of 2014. His plan is to either redshirt in 2014 and play four straight seasons from 2015-2018, or start playing in 2014. More will be known Wednesday when he meets in person with BYU secondary coach Nick Howell, who is also from Northern Utah. Preator said he grew up a Utah Utes fan, and both his father and step-father attended Utah. But after attending BYU's camp last summer and meeting with BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall, he started to consider BYU more and more. "I talked with my family and they all agreed that BYU would be the best place for me," he said. "[Mendenhall] explained to me that BYU could help me reach my goals, help me with the five things in my life that are most important to me." Preator has also played soccer and basketball for Fremont, but won't play basketball this season as his hamstring injury heals. He's not sure yet if he will play soccer in the spring. "It's funny. I always thought that one day I would play college football at Utah. But it's going to be BYU," he said. "I'm really excited to go play football for BYU." In a previous blog, we reported that Oregon receiver Tanner Shipley has re-committed to BYU.

Last week, BYU received a commitment from Bountiful High linebacker and running back Rylee Gautavai, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior.
