A suspicious substance found Wednesday in mail sent to tribal offices in Vernal that triggered the response of a hazardous materials team was found to be harmless after initial tests, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
FBI Spokeswoman Debbie Bertram said the substance was field tested and the results produced negative results for anything harmful. As a precaution, the offices for the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation were visited by a hazmat team from Vernal. Two employees of the tribe also were sent to a local hospital for examination "out of an abundance of caution," Bertram said.
FBI agents responded to investigate the suspicious substance at about 8 p.m. Wednesday. Bertram said that agents will continue to test the substance to determine exactly what it is.
