Utah State football coach Matt Wells has almost completely finished his offensive staff for the coming season, The Tribune has learned.

Sources close to the program have confirmed that Kevin McGiven will be hired as offensive coordinator, and Mark Weber is leaving as offensive line coach at BYU to take the same job with the Aggies.

Other media reports have linked Luke Wells, Matt Wells' brother, to the program's open positions at tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

McGiven, a quarterbacks coach at Utah State in 2009, comes to Logan from Montana State, where he was the offensive coordinator for the Bobcats. An Orem native, he's also been a coach at Memphis, Weber State and Southern Utah.

Under McGiven, Utah State should continue its spread system its kept up the last few years. While with the Aggies, McGiven helped mentor quarterback Diondre Borel.

This past season at Montana State, McGivens led the Bobcats to the No. 20 scoring offense (33.46 ppg) and the No. 29 total offense (414.38 ypg) in the FCS. Montana State quarterback DeNarius McGee was No. 18 in total offense in the FCS, averaging 271.85 ypg.

Weber has been at BYU since 2007, where he oversaw the offensive line on some of BYU's top units. He's also coached offensive lines at UNC, Fresno State, UCLA and UNLV.

Luke Wells is the tight end coach at Iowa State. His hire as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator has been reported by the Herald-Journal and CoachingSearch.com, which has speculated he could be co-offensive coordinator with McGiven. He's also had coaching stops at Louisiana-Monroe and Oklahoma.

These are coach Matt Wells' first hires outside the program. He's retained four other assistants: defensive line coach Frank Maile, cornerbacks coach Kendrick Shaver, linebackers coach Kevin Clune and wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknight.

The biggest question mark remaining is defensive coordinator. The runningbacks coaching position is also still open.
