The No. 2 BYU men's volleyball team opened its season with a win, topping the University of Hawaii 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 Friday night at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo.

Junior Taylor Sander led the Cougars with 14 kills, and Ryan Boyce had 27 assists.

BYU and Hawaii play the second match of the two-match series Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Smith Fieldhouse.

Wrestling

Wyoming 20, Utah Valley 12 • In Orem, UVU earned four wins but still came up short against the 16th-ranked Cowboys.

Abner Cook (165 pounds), Adam Fager (heavyweight), Jade Rauser (125) and Avery Garner (141) each notched victories for the Wolverines, who host the UVU Open beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
