Questar Corp., the natural gas company based in Salt Lake, said its Questar Fueling arm has signed an agreement to build, own and operate a facility in Houston that will serve up to 200 natural gas-powered trucks operated by Swift Transportation and Central Fuel Lines.
Their trucks are projected to use about 5 million gallons of compressed natural gas per year.
Questar said the majority of the vehicles will use a private facility in which the vehicles fill up overnight. The remainder will use a five-lane, high-speed facility that also will be open to the public.
"Questar Corp. is excited to announce a partnership between these 'best-in-class' carriers and our fueling company," Ron Jibson, president and CEO, said in a statement. "Swift Transportation and Central Freight Lines are industry leaders in the adoption of CNG as a transportation fuel for the heavy-duty (vehicle) market."
Jerry Moyes, chairman and CEO of Swift, said the fueling station will help the company facilitate the transition of its fleet to CNG.
"Our vendors expect us to consistently find ways to improve our transportation efficiencies," he said.
Questar Corp. is perhaps best known in Utah as the parent company of Questar Gas, the utility that provides most of the state's residents with the fuel to heat their apartments, homes and businesses.
