West Valley City • Coming off a week of rest, the Utah Grizzlies fell flat at the Maverik Center, losing 5-1 to the Las Vegas Wranglers.
After a scoreless first period, in which Utah goaltender Grant Rollheiser stopped 19 shots, the Wranglers let loose. Las Vegas scored three goals in a span of less than five minutes in the second period, and then added another with 29 seconds left in the frame.
"To give up 19 shots in one period in our building coming off a week's rest doesn't sit well," said Grizzlies coach Kevin Colley. "We weren't managing the puck, and we need to figure out some stuff. It was a tough game to watch. It's a new-look team and some guys are being asked to step into different roles, and they need to figure out if they want this opportunity or not."
In front of a home crowd of 3,383, Riley Armstrong scored Utah's only goal, 3 minutes and 46 seconds into the third period, but Las Vegas ended the game with another score.
In all, Las Vegas outshot Utah 38-35. Sean Wiles and Adam Hughesman led the Wranglers, each scoring once and adding two assists.
The Grizzlies will face the Wranglers again Saturday at 7 p.m. —
