Cottonwood Heights • Alta point guard Zach Rollins knocked down a straightaway 3-pointer for the first points in Friday night's game against Brighton, and in a way, that's when the Bengals' chances ended.

"After the first one goes down, your confidence goes up," Rollins said. "You just have to keep shooting."

The junior knocked down two more triples in the first quarter and finished the night with five as the Hawks routed Brighton 65-43.

The Bengals entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record in region play, including a two-point win over Alta earlier this year. In that contest, the Hawks held an 11-point lead with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left to play but squandered the lead.

Coach Jim Barker "told us not to forget the feeling,"said junior Trevor Hill, who led Alta with 16 points.

"We got cautious last time," Barker said. "This time we kept attacking."

The Hawks shot over the Bengals' zone, knocking down a dozen 3-pointers, including four from guard R.J. Beard. And when Brighton went to man, quick ball movement found cutters for layups.

"I see it in practice," Barker said. "But we haven't' transitioned it to the court for a complete game until tonight. This is the first time we've had a complete four-quarter game. I enjoyed that quite a bit."

Forward Travis Devashrayee scored 13 on the night for Brighton (14-5, 5-1). And Bengal star Brandon Miller finished with 23 points, but he often was frustrated by the Hawks' swarming defense.

"He's going to make shots," Barker said. "He's a really good player. But you can't get frustrated when he makes shots. You've got to continue to make him work, contest every shot, hope he misses."

The Hawks (9-7, 4-2) had lost four games by four points or fewer. Barker said he hopes Friday night's win will be a turning point for his team.

"Hopefully we're starting to learn how to win games," he said. "If we keep attack, the sky is the limit."
