North Ogden • The tingle of the leftover adrenaline buzz still was purring up through the rafters of the gym, and Weber guard Hayden Schenck stood at the center of the court, still breathless, swarmed by teammates and fans.

The mob sang the Warriors' fight song. The team huddled in a circle and cheered. Schenck exchanged several hugs before jogging off to the locker room.

The best player to come through Weber in many years had earned the signature victory of his high school career.

"It was the most intense game I've played at Weber High," Schenck said.

Schenck attacked the heart of the Davis defense and slashed his way to 24 points, including seven in overtime, to give Weber a 66-59 win over Davis on Tuesday night. The victory knotted the teams atop the Region 1 standings with just three games to play.

"That's a special game that in 10 years he's going to look back on, no question," Warriors coach Mark Larsen said about Schenck. "And he's been a part of some huge games here for us. He's a tremendous kid and a tremendous leader. He's so special."

After both teams failed to capitalize on a chance to win in regulation, the Warriors dominated overtime, outscoring the Darts 12-5. Schenck, as he so often has been for the Warriors, was the key. He made five foul shots and a field goal in overtime.

Tension in the gym built even before overtime as the game wore on and it became clear it was going to come down to a classic finish. Player emotions on both sides were vibrant, and a large crowd hung on every play, giving the game the feel of a de-facto playoff game.

"The atmosphere for that game was insane," Schenck said. "It was the funnest game I've ever played in. The bigger they are, the funner they are to play in."

Now Schenck, Class 5A's leading scorer, is in position to finish his career in special fashion — by delivering the Warriors their first region title in more than a decade. The Warriors face Syracuse, Northridge and Layton in their final three games, while Davis will play Layton, Fremont and Northridge.

"Coming into this game, we talked as a team, and it was a must-win for us," Schenck said. "Our region's so tough, you can't drop games. We worked hard the last couple weeks and put the time in." —
