Provo • Taylor Sander had 11 kills and six digs as No. 1 BYU swept No. 6 UCLA at Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball.

Freshman Ben Patch smashed 10 kills and Ryan Boyce had a match-high 34 assists for the Cougars (7-2, 6-1), who play their first road match of the season Friday at Pepperdine.

Skiing

Miles Havlick won the men's 20K freestyle for his fourth consecutive victory, helping Utah finish second in the nine-team Utah Invitational. At Soldier Hollow on Saturday, Havlick finished the 20K in 50 minutes, 5.5 seconds — just one-tenth of a second ahead of Colorado's Rune Malo Oedegaard. Utah's Einar Ulsund was third in 50:13.

Colorado (904 points) placed first in the four-day competition split between Soldier Hollow (nordic) and Loveland, Colo. (alpine). Utah had 845 points, Denver (777) was third and Westminster (190) placed seventh.

Softball

Seattle 6, Utah 3 • In St. George, the Redhawks scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to hand the Utes their first loss of the season. Chalese Fankhauser was the only Utah (2-1) player with two hits, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Tennessee 6, BYU 3 • In St. George, the Cougars scored three runs in the seventh, but their rally fell shorts against the No. 6-ranked Vols in the first of two games Saturday. JC Clayton and Lacey Millett each went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Cougars.

BYU 7, Idaho State 4 • In St. George, Marissa Bravo went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs as the Cougars scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for their first win of the season in the second of two games Saturday. JC Clayton was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jenna Goar was 1-for-4 with two RBIs for BYU (1-2).

Loyola Marymount 3, Utah State 0 • Loyola's Dana Waldusky threw a one-hitter to shut out the Aggies at the Red Desert Classic in Logan.

Southern Utah 4, Utah State 1 • The Aggies fell behind early to lose to in-state rival SUU at the Red Desert Classic. Kassandra Uchida was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Utah State (0-4). Kelsey Bryant hit a home run and Danielle Axe allowed six hits and one run in a complete game for the Thunderbirds (1-4).

Men's tennis

Utah 5, Montana State 0 • The Utes (5-0) earned their second shutout of the season, sweeping the Grizzlies at the Eccles Tennis Center.

BYU 4, Santa Clara 3 • Andrey Goryachkov won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6 singles to propel the Cougars over the Broncos in both teams' West Coast Conference season opener. BYU (7-2, 1-0) lost all three doubles matches, but rebounded by winning four of six singles matches.

Women's tennis

DePaul 4, Utah 3 • In Chicago, the Utes lost the doubles point and a pivotal match at No. 5 singles — which was decided 7-5 in the third set — to drop to 2-2 this season.
