Elvin Bishop
Spotlight show • The 70-year-old guitarist with his signature Red Dog guitar (Gibson ES-345) went solo in 1968. Before that he was an integral member of the influential Paul Butterfield Blues Band and a player on the seminal 1969 album "The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper." These days, Bishop lives off the royalties from his 1970s hit "Fooled Around and Fell in Love." Directors Spike Lee, Paul Thomas Anderson and Rob Zombie are fans of the song, having used it in their movies. In a phone interview, Bishop said he performs only when he wants to, and that includes being a regular performer on blues cruises — he just got off one with Taj Mahal. During the week, Bishop lives in the northern California countryside and preserves up to 400 cans of the fruit annually from his 40 fruit trees. "I grew up on a farm and I know what real food tastes like," he said. Bishop will bring a stellar six-piece band with him to Park City, including the former bandleader of the late bluesman Albert King's band.

Desert Noises
Spotlight show • Desert Noises joins Neon Trees, Imagine Dragons and The Used on the list of Utah County success stories. The alt-country ensemble, which will perform at Kilby Court, recently finished a two-year tour to promote its 2011 album "Mountain Sea." The band — which has not yet been signed — includes frontman Kyle Henderson, Tyler Osmond, Patrick Boyer and Brennan Allen. Henderson said he and his bandmates are planning another large-scale tour, one that will take them to Ohio in their new 12-passenger Chevy Express van. They also have a new EP, November's "I Won't See You." And during a recent Southern California sojourn, the band headlined at The Hotel Cafe, a Los Angeles hot spot. Despite all the recent recognition, the band's mantra is still "patience," Henderson said. "We want to lift each other up rather than push [each other] down." Hannah Georgas and The North Valley are also on the bill.

Oscar weekend is usually light on new releases — on the theory that Hollywood studios want to give everyone a last shot at the major nominees.
There are a couple studio films, which seem to further the theory that movie producers can hide bad films from critics anytime — but to hide them from their industry colleagues, nothing's better than Oscar weekend.
• "Snitch" is a message-heavy drama that promises to be action-packed — but delays all the action until the last 30 minutes. Dwayne Johnson stars as a construction company owner who tries to act when his son is caught in a DEA sting and faces 10 years in prison. After the movie's long-winded screed against mandatory-minimum sentences, Johnson's character makes a deal with an ambitious U.S. Attorney (Susan Sarandon) to go undercover and ferret out a drug dealer (Michael K. Williams) tied to a Mexican cartel boss (Benjamin Bratt). Johnson's acting chops are wanting, and the movie's action is too little, too late.
• The other studio film, the horror-thriller "Dark Skies," was not screened for critics. (Mike Ryan wrote a hilarious account of his thwarted attempt to see "Dark Skies" at a midnight public screening in New York last night.
• The Tower has two new titles this weekend. One is "John Dies at the End," a trippy and entertainingly bonkers horror/sci-fi mash-up about two slackers (Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes) who discover a street drug with supernatural connotations. The other is "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga," a documentary co-directed and narrated by Werner Herzog, an uneven portrait of Siberian fur trappers using ancient techniques as they battle the elements.

However, ABC's dumb-as-dirt red carpet show generally looks positively intellectual compared to the stupidity that you can count on from E! That cable network will air seven hours of pre-shows beginning at 11:30 a.m. — and then a 90-minute "after party" at 9:30 p.m.
