Salt Lake County Search and Rescue crews recovered a seriously injured snowboarder Monday afternoon in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the victim, a 23-year-old male, crashed onto rocks and sustained injuries to his legs, back and pelvis late Monday morning. He was part of a group of three out for a day of winter recreation.

The group was in the Lower Lisa Falls area, about 3 miles up the canyon in the Y Couloir chute area, which is noted for its rough, challenging terrain. The injured man, whose name was not released, was hurt while attempting a jump down the mountainside, Hoyal said.

Rescuers quickly reached the man, treated him and prepared him to be hoisted aboard a medical helicopter. That was accomplished by 1 p.m. with the helicopter heading to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Hoyal said.

The accident occurred at 9:30 a.m. Friends called 911 for help at 10:22 a.m., Hoyal said.

The victim was reported to be conscious and talking but in considerable pain.

He was listed in serious condition at a local hospital Monday evening, Hoyal said.
