Around the league
Bills • General manager Buddy Nix says he hasn't determined whether to keep quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Coming off his second inconsistent season as starter, Fitzpatrick is due to earn a $3 million bonus this month as part of a six-year, $59 million contract extension he signed in October 2011. Meanwhile, linebacker Shawne Merriman announced that he plans to retire. The former San Diego Chargers star spent parts of three seasons with Buffalo. Last year, he was cut by the Bills in August only to be re-signed in October to help shore up the team's injury-riddled defense.
Vikings • Minnesota released veteran receiver Michael Jenkins, clearing $3.25 million of space under the salary cap. Jenkins was third on the team with 40 receptions, 449 yards and two touchdowns last season, plus a 50-yard catch for a score in the playoff game at Green Bay.
Falcons • Atlanta signed running back Antone Smith to a two-year contract extension. Smith has only one carry in three seasons with the Falcons. Playing primarily on special teams, Smith appeared in 13 games in 2012 and had four tackles.
