Utah baseball loses home opener to Cal

State colleges • Utes attempt rally, but Bears hold them off.

The Utes lost their home opener to Cal 9-5, rallying from a 4-0 deficit before falling to the Bears' five runs in the last two innings.

San Diego 5, BYU 3 • The Cougars lost on the road for the second night in a row.

UVU 9, Saint Mary's 6 • The Wolverines ended a three-game losing streak with a rally in Moraga, Calif.

SLCC 8-8, Colorado Northwestern CC 5-0 • The Bruins won both games in Salt Lake City, with 20 hits and no errors on the day.

Women's tennis

Southern Utah 5, Portland State 2 • The Thunderbirds earned their first conference win Friday in Cedar City, topping the Vikings by taking both doubles points.


Utah State 5, Boise State 3 • The Aggies won in Boise in an extra-inning game when Kassandra Uchida drove in Allison Lenzora in the top of the eighth. Nicole Arata added an insurance run.

Utah Valley 6, Green Bay 2; UVU 2, Farleigh Dickinson 1 • The Wolverines stayed undefeated at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., although they needed an extra inning in their second game of the day to eke out a win.

SLCC 8-8, Snow 0-4 • The Bruins beat the Badgers in both conference games in Salt Lake City.

Men's basketball

Cal St. San Bernardino 75, Dixie State 69 • The Red Storm fell in Bellingham, Wash., in the NCAA II West Region quarterfinals.

Women's basketball

Utah Valley 67, Houston Baptist 53 • The Wolverines won their Great West Conference semifinal, advancing to its third championship game in four years. Sammie Jensen led UVU with 26 points and 14 rebounds.


BYU divers Nicholas Suder and Raleigh Williams Taylor reached the finals at the Zone Diving Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Utah diver Josiah Purss qualified for the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place finish.


Boise State 195.300-Utah State194.125 • The Aggies fell in Logan, losing every event to the Mustangs despite earning a season-best 48.975 on floor.

SUU 196.20 • The Thunderbirds beat Iowa, San Jose State and Ball State in the regular-season finale in Cedar City.
