Charron Mason first met Rand Rasmussen when she attended his basketball camp in the fourth grade. She later played for Rasmussen on the Bingham girls' basketball team then served 11 years as his assistant coach.

Now Mason gets to extend Rasmussen's legacy with the Miners' program.

Mason took over as coach last week, two weeks after Rasmussen announced that his 24th season was his last. It was not a slam dunk decision for Mason, who had been named the coach at Corner Canyon High, which opens in August in Draper.

"It was such a stressful decision," said Mason, who has taught at Bingham for eight years. "I had already committed to Corner Canyon, and I had been working. I had been setting up their schedule and meeting parents.

"There's a lot of emotion tied into it. I thought about it and what I wanted to do with my life. And it just all came back to Bingham."

Though Rasmussen's announcement March 1 caught Mason off guard at first, in the end, the chance to coach at her alma mater and stay with the Miner family was an overwhelming draw.

Mason, who said Corner Canyon principal Mary Bailey and athletic director Stephen Park fully supported her decision, said she will continue many of the program's signature philosophies but plans to make it her own as well.

Rasmussen, of course, whole-heartedly endorsed his longtime assistant's promotion.

"I think the transition for the rest of the program that's returning is a lot easier this way," Rasmussen said. "I think she believes in a lot of stuff we did together, but she will tweak some things to fit her personality, which she should do."

The Miners went 23-1 this past season and lost to Layton in the Class 5A state semifinals.

Dubach resigns

Just as it was announcing the hiring of Mason, Bingham lost its boys' basketball coach. Mark Dubach resigned after 10 seasons.

"I have resigned and have no comment on any other questions. I wish the boys and new coach the best," Dubach wrote in a text message.

Dubach led the Miners to the state title in 2006 and guided Bingham to a 14-10 finish this past season.

Athletic director Brad Bevan said in an e-mail that the school hopes to name Dubach's replacement by March 25.
