Allegiant airline will begin nonstop jet service between Provo and Oakland International Airport beginning June 7 and is introducing its service with one-way fares as low as $59.99.

The new flights will operate twice weekly.

"Initially we will begin offering the flights on Mondays and Fridays, but that schedule could change depending upon demand," said Jessica Wheeler, a spokeswoman for Allegiant.

Provo Mayor John R. Curtis hailed the new flights as a major step forward for the airport and the community.

"The potential of a flight to California has been a part of almost every conversation I've had over the past few years," Curtis said in a statement. "This flight into the Bay Area is another part of the momentum we're experiencing in Provo."

The introductory fares — seats are limited —must be purchased by March 27 for travel by October 28. Wheeler said Allegiant expects to have tickets for those flights available for purchase on its website at http://www.allegiant.com by the end of the day Wednesday.

She added that Allegiant decided to add the flights because of the success it has seen with its flights between Provo and Mesa, Ariz.

"Oakland is the gateway to the Bay Area, and we think that there is a lot of opportunity for us to serve that market from Provo," she said.

Allegiant began offering nonstop flights between Provo and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on Feb. 15, 2012. It announced that service shortly before Frontier Airlines ended its service between Provo Municipal Airport and Denver International in January 2012. —
