A man's in custody after West Valley City police say he drove up to about 110 mph to get away from them.
Police were surveilling the 19-year-old man in a Honda Civic that was reported stolen on Wednesday. He allegedly fled in their first attempt to catch him Wednesday night, and did so again when they tried to spike the Civic's tires near 7600 S. 2700 West on Thursday afternoon, said Lt. Kent Stokes.
He drove around the spikes, so a patrolman turned on his lights to stop him and that's when the man sped off on 2700 West, reaching an estimated speed of 110 mph even though the officers weren't pursuing him, Stokes said. The speed limit in the area is 35 mph.
