Another player that BYU basketball coach Dave Rose was heavily pursuing to add size and athleticism to his 2013-14 team has chosen to go in a different direction. Tanner Lancona, a 6-foot-8 power forward and high school senior from Southern California (Orange County) recently picked Saint Louis over BYU, Colorado State, Kansas State and others. Lancona signed with Washington State last November, but was released from his scholarship by coach Ken Bone and re-opened his recruitment. He was considered the prize of WSU's 2013 recruiting class before the release and is a three-star recruit, according to Scout.com. Lancona averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds for Tesoro High last season. Lancona's father, Sean, told Ben Weixlmann of BillikenReport.com that Saint Louis was similar to BYU in that it also has an Honor Code. "They have an honor code at BYU," Sean Lancona told Weixlmann. "Whether you are LDS or not, you have to abide by it. As [Saint Louis], they had that attitude without the rulebook. The players wanted to pass their classes, were serious about things, but they also had fun in moderation and wanted to win on the court." Sean Lancona said SLU's situation is similar to BYU's, but apparently didn't elaborate. Presumably, he meant that BYU needs frontcourt help."SLU had a very unique situation," Sean Lancona said. "There were three schools that had that kind of situation — Colorado State, BYU, and SLU."
