Police say a registered sex offender from Arizona —who befriended a boy he met in a southwest Salt Lake County LDS church and later molested the youth repeatedly over a two-year period — has been arrested.
Michael Driggs, 62, now of Sandy, was booked into Salt Lake County jail Tuesday. He was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail on first-degree felony counts of sodomy on a child and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, and a third-degree felony count of dealing harmful material to a minor.
In 3rd District Court documents, Driggs is accused of having begun molesting the boy when he was 12, in January 2004.
Details on exactly when the alleged victim contacted police about Driggs were not immediately released by police or prosecutors.
However, police did say that Driggs was not in an official church leadership position when he met the boy, and that none of the alleged sexual activity occurred on church property.
In statements made to Unified Police detectives, the boy said Driggs helped him set up an e-mail address and then began to show him pornographic movies and photos on the Internet. The boy also told police that Driggs later touched his genitalia and that they engaged in oral sex, court paper state.
The alleged abuse occurred at Driggs' home in Kearns.
Court records show that Driggs had been previously convicted of sexual conduct with a minor in Maricopa County, Ariz., and was a registered sex offender as a result.
