Thanks to a 20-foot putt in near darkness, Sandy resident Mike Weir will play in the 113th U.S. Open.
Weir filled one of the final berths in the field as an alternate Monday. Last week, he was eliminated in an 11-golfer playoff for the final seven spots in a sectional qualifying event at Columbus, Ohio. But in the fading light, with his caddie having to tend the flagstick for his 20-footer, he won a further competition to determine the No. 1 alternate from that site.
Weir will be making his 13th appearance in the U.S. Open, having played every year from 1999-2010.
