Taylorsville • Residents who want more information to help them decide whether the city should join the Salt Lake Valley Fire District can find plenty online.

A citizens committee headed by former Mayor Janice Auger Rasmussen presented a report Wednesday to the Taylorsville City Council that analyzes the costs and benefits of fire and emergency services options.

Available at http://www.tvillefirevote.com/, those options include joining the district, continuing to contract with the Unified Fire Authority (UFA) and creating the city's own fire department.

The district levies property taxes that are then forwarded to the UFA for fire services. Under this arrangement, the district owns the fire stations and equipment of member cities and is responsible for their upkeep.

Currently, Taylorsville levies the taxes for fire and emergency services provided by the UFA and is responsible for maintaining fire stations and equipment.

City council members voted 4-1 in June 2012 to join the district, which planned to add fire personnel and build a new fire station in the west-side city.

But after the council vote, a group of residents who say a third station is unnecessary gathered enough signatures to put the membership question to a vote on November's general election ballot. District membership was then put on hold and the council appointed the 10-member committee in April to study the issue.

Rasmussen told the council that the group has worked to provide factual, unbiased information.
