The 8th District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for one vacancy on the district court and two vacancies on the juvenile court.

The vacancies result from the establishment of two new judicial positions and the retirement of Judge Larry Steele from the juvenile court. The 8th Judicial District includes Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties.

The nominees for the juvenile court vacancy are: attorney Samuel P. Chiara, Assistant Utah Attorney General Marea A. Doherty, Chief Deputy for the Uintah County Attorney's Office Michael C. Drechsel, attorney Ryan B. Evershed, and executive director of the Judicial Conduct Commission Colin R. Winchester.

The nominees for the new juvenile court position are: Samuel Chiara; Marea Doherty; Michael Drechsel; attorney Keith E. Eddington; and attorney Herbert W. Gillespie.

The nominees for the new district court position are: Deputy Duchesne County Attorney Grant H. Charles, Samuel Chiara, Keith Eddington, Uintah County Attorney Mark Thomas, and Colin Winchester.

Written comments can be submitted to 8th District Judicial Nominating Commission Chair Brad Hancock at Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, P.O. Box 142330, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-2330.

The deadline for written comments is noon on Aug. 7. The Nominating Commission may request further information or conduct an investigation of the nominees after reviewing public comments. After the public comment period, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary Herbert, who will have 30 days to make an appointment. Herbert's appointee is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
