Here's what's happening in pop culture:

• Mounting the geek version of LeBron James' infamous ESPN special, the BBC will air a half-hour special Sunday to announce who will take over as The Doctor on the mega-popular time-travel series "Doctor Who." [The Hollywood Reporter]

• Ellen DeGeneres will return to host the Oscars in 2014. [Twitter, Variety]

• NBC News anchor Brian Williams announced on Thursday that he'll be taking a leave of absence, to get knee-replacement surgery – because of a football injury the 54-year-old newsman suffered in high school. [The Huffington Post]
