Tooele • Entering this weekend's AMA Pro Road Racing event at Miller Motorsports Park, Josh Herrin had never beaten his teammate Josh Hayes straight up. That changed on Saturday in the National Guard SuperBike race as Herrin scored his third victory of the year, finishing the 50-mile road race in 29 minutes, 49.566 seconds, just 0.093 seconds ahead of second-place Roger Hayden and 0.783 seconds ahead of third-place Hayes. The victory leaves Herrin trailing Hayes by two points in the season standings, 245-243.

Herrin, last season's SuperBike rookie of the year, had beaten Hayes only on technicalities before Saturday — twice in races when Hayes had mechanical failures and once when Hayes was penalized five seconds for starting too early.

"To get my first win without Josh being out of the race feels really good," Herrin said. "With four races to go in the series, it's a huge motivation to get a win finally without anybody being out of the race."

The trackside announcer called Saturday's SuperBike race the best of the year, and most of the riders agreed. Herrin and runner-up Hayden passed each other multiple times on the final two laps before Herrin finally prevailed.

Hayes was disappointed finishing third, but complimented the two racers ahead of him, saying that he had "the best seat in the house the last three or four laps." He vowed to finish better on Sunday.

"They just beat me today," Hayes said. "I have an idea for tomorrow and I think I can give myself a better shot at it, and I'm looking forward to coming back and giving these boys a race tomorrow.

Sixteen-year-old Joe Roberts of California won the second race of the day, the Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport series. Roberts has raced just four races this year but won all four.

In the first race of the day, Cameron Beaubier won the GoPro Daytona SportBike race riding for the Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team. His teammate Garrett Gerloff finished second after leading for much of the race. JD Beach of RoadRace Factory finished third. "At the beginning of the race I struggled really bad," Beaubier said. " ... I wasn't able to do the times I did in qualifying."

The 20-year-old Beaubier set a GoPro Daytona SportBike lap record on Friday during qualifying with a time of 1:53.637, lowering the previous record by more than 1.6 seconds — a massive margin in road racing.

Beaubier has now won eight races this season and has a nearly insurmountable 71-point lead with just four races left. —
