Cheryl Cope writes "fireworks are a part of the way we gained independence" ("Bombs bursting in air," Public Forum, Aug. 2). Sorry but I missed that in our history lessons. They are at best symbolic of "bombs bursting in air."

I have no problem with public fireworks displays. The problem comes when everyone lights them off. It is at best inconsiderate to fill your neighbors' air with smoke; not everyone has filters or air conditioners. Let's also not forget the senseless fires that are caused by idiots using them.

Limit them to the 4th of July, and please stop setting them off at all hours of the night.
