A 22-year-old Orem woman sitting in front of her house was killed Sunday morning when an allegedly intoxicated driver drove up onto the sidewalk and hit her.

Orem police Lt. Craig Martinez said Ashlee Zimmer was sitting on the sidewalk smoking a cigarette about 1:25 a.m. outside her home at 844 N. 100 West when Ramiro Serrano Hernandez, 26, of Pleasant Grove, drove an SUV onto the sidewalk.

Martinez said Hernandez struck Zimmer and also crashed into a building.

Zimmer was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

Hernandez allegedly fled, but police found him about 30 minutes later hiding behind a dumpster at 845 N. State St., Martinez said.

Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of automobile homicide and taken to the Orem Jail.

Martinez said alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Martinez confirmed that Lindon police had cited Hernandez for intoxication and disorderly conduct earlier that evening while he was at a party. He also confirmed that a friend gave Hernandez a ride home, but the suspect later decided to drive somewhere.
