A 38-year-old Santa Clara man was in critical condition after his vehicle collided with two overpass pillars on I-15, and caught fire Saturday afternoon, according to StGeorgeUtah.com.

Around 3:30 p.m., the car hit the first pillar while traveling northbound on I-15 near mile-marker 47, just south of Cedar City.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper said there were no passengers in the car when it drifted off the left shoulder of the road and struck the pillar on the driver's side of the car, StGeorgeUtah.com reported. The vehicle then went into a spin and hit the second pillar, again on the driver's side.

The car caught on fire after coming to a rest; however passing motorists were able to free the unconscious man from the car before the flames reached him. The driver was taken by ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City.
