Re your editorial "Move to Amend" (Opinion, Sept.8), there are some problems with it that need to be addressed. This nation has a constitutional republican form of government, not a democracy.

The founders never envisioned a democracy because they knew a republic would safeguards citizen rights. Democracy is majority rules, and only they have all the rights. The disturbing point made in the editorial is what most people will miss. It is not about democracies or republics, but the destruction of corporations.

I firmly believe that free trade is destroying this nation, taking it to third-world status, because any nation that loses it manufacturing base loses it economic security.

However, taking away the identity of corporations will also destroy jobs and limit economic stability by killing the engine that produces the money that small businesses rely upon.

Small businesses are the backbone of the nation. Without them, most of us would be without jobs. Reading this editorial was like reading the revolutionary material of a century ago, just before the Russian Revolution.
