Azarenka flopsin first round
tennis • Defending champion Victoria Azarenka double-faulted 15 times Monday in Beijing in losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to Andrea Petkovic in the first round of the China Open. Azarenka, ranked No. 2, was broken five times. It was the second straight tournament in which she lost her first match, having been beaten by Venus Williams in Tokyo last week.
Guard eligibleto play for Florida
college basketball • Former Rutgers guard Eli Carter is eligible to play at Florida this season. The NCAA granted Carter a waiver to play immediately after transferring from Rutgers this year. Carter left Rutgers after the school fired coach Mike Rice, who was caught on videotape shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at players during practice. Carter, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, averaged 14.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season as a sophomore. He broke his right leg in February and has not been cleared to run or cut.
Germany explores bid for 2022 Games
Olympics • Germany is moving forward with a possible Munich bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The German Olympic Sports Confederation approved a concept based mostly on Munich's unsuccessful bid for the 2018 Games, which were awarded to Pyeongchang, South Korea. Munich would host indoor ice sports, such as figure skating, while Garmisch-Partenkirchen would stage the Alpine events.
