Cottonwood Heights police allegedly found a lot more than a burnt joint after someone complained about the smell of marijuana.

Police arrived at an apartment on the 6800 South block of Countrywoods Circle (1115 East) at 11 p.m. Tuesday night and picked up on the "unmistakable smell of burning marijuana" coming from an open window, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Gary Young.

The man who answered the door was armed with a loaded black handgun, Young said.

Officers detained him and got a warrant to search his home — though the man ultimately consented to the search, as well, Young added.

Once inside, police found an AR-15, an AK-47, several shotguns and handguns, 145 grams of harvested marijuana in packaging consistent with the kind used for marijuana distribution, one marijuana plant and some paraphernalia, the sergeant said.

The man was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County jail under suspicion of drugs and weapons charges.
