A 54-year-old man was expected to be charged with homicide by assault this week after a man he is accused of beating with a tree branch died from his injuries.

LaVerkin Police Chief Lloyd Watkins confirmed Monday that the 64-year-old man involved in the assault died Sunday at University Medical Center in Las Vegas.

The Associated Press identified the victim as Donald George Loomer of Hurricane.

Watkins said John Stettler Stucki of LaVerkin was expected to be charged in the next few days with Loomer's death.

Stucki allegedly initially told police that gang members had beat the man, and he didn't know how Loomer ended up in his driveway. But he later allegedly told police he hit Loomer with a stick after Loomer hit him in the face with a coffee cup, the AP reported.
