Houston • Well, at least BYU receiver Cody Hoffman will never forget the game in which he passed Dennis Pitta for the most receptions in school history and tied Austin Collie for the most touchdown receptions at a school that has thrown the football around a little bit in the last half-century.
In BYU's 47-46 win over Houston on Saturday at Reliant Stadium, Hoffman caught seven passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, extending his streak to 37 games in which the senior has caught at least one pass.
He's now BYU's all-time receptions leader with 228.
"It feels good, being able to pass a great receiver like Pitta for catches," Hoffman said. "I am not going to slow down, though. I am going to keep going and set the record even higher."
His fourth-quarter touchdown catch of 25 yards, the second straight game in which he's hauled in a long TD pass while being interfered with in the end zone, was the 30th of his career.
"That seems to be the story of the year," Hoffman said. "I don't mind it. A touchdown is a touchdown whether they are draped all over me or not. I will take them however I get them."
Other records and milestones
• The 93 combined points are the most in a BYU game since 2007, when the Cougars fell 55-47 to Tulsa.
• Houston's 46 points are the most against BYU since Utah had 54 in 2011.
• Taysom Hill accounted for 545 yards of total offense — 417 passing, 128 rushing — the ninth-highest total ever at BYU. It was the first time a BYU QB has thrown for more than 400 yards since Max Hall in 2008 (486) against Northern Iowa.
• Hill passed Steve Young as the third-leading quarterback rusher in BYU history, and now has 1,108 yards in his career, trailing only Virgil Carter (1,225) and Eldon Fortie (1,624).
Briefly
A fire alarm went off at 2 a.m. Saturday morning at the BYU team hotel in Houston, but only a couple players reported being awakened by it, or hearing it. … The flag bearers Saturday were Austin Jorgensen (team), Adam Hine (special teams) and former receiver Michael Reed (alumni), who played for BYU from 2005-08 and is from nearby Baytown, Texas. … BYU had 18 first downs in the first quarter, while Houston had just two. The Cougars finished 7 of 21 on third down.
