A manhunt was under way Tuesday in southwestern Utah after an Arizona parole officer was shot in downtown St. George.
St. George police Sgt. Sam Despain said the officer, from just across the Utah-Arizona line in Mohave County, was shot in the upper leg about 6:20 a.m. inside an office building in the 400 East block of Tabernacle Street.
The suspect, described as 6-foot, slender and wearing black pants and a white hockey mask under a black hooded sweatshirt, fled on foot and remained at large.
Despain said investigators not immediately been able to further identify the suspect, or determine if he was a parolee the officer was attempting to contact.
"We're just beginning to piece things together, gather evidence a the scene," Despain said late Tuesday morning.
It is not uncommon for Mohave County Adult Probation and Parole officers to check on their charges in St. George, which is just a few miles north of the Arizona border.
The parole officer, whose identity was not released, was reported in fair condition at Dixie Regional Medical Center.
